The railroad line Linha do Dão was transformed into a cycling and walking path, probably the most beautiful in Europe!
Cycling on a former railroad!
The railroad line “Linha do Dão”, which connected Santa Comba Dão and Viseu and was discontinued in 1988, was transformed in 2011 into a cycling and walking path, the so-called “Ecopista do Dão”.
At 49 km, it is not only the longest Ecopista in Portugal, but also probably the most beautiful.
Virtually flat cycling among the mountains
A large part of this bike path, adjacent to Quinta da Abelenda, runs along the banks of the river Dão. Each bend in the river is followed by a bend in the Ecopista, with yet another view of the river.
And it is easy to cycle because, since it was once a railroad line, there are no steep inclines in this nevertheless mountainous area.
Our trusted partner Abelenda Bike Rental is located on the Ecopista do Dão cycling route, near Santa Comba Dão.
NO BIKE? They have different types of good quality bikes!
The standard bikes are excellent for the Ecopista, but they also have good mountain bikes, a tandem, children’s bikes and also a child’s cart and dog cart for behind the bike.
With their transfer service “Descent Ecopista” we bring cyclists and bikes to the other side of the Ecopista, almost 50 km away.
From Viseu, you cycle 47 km back.
Almost the whole route slowly downhill, so very easy cycling.
If you want to cycle a shorter route, 30 km, also with transfer, that’s also possible.
For minimum 2 people up to groups of 20+ people.
